Did you know that the original tower was built on the site of today’s Big Ben in 1288 with funds provided by the Lord Chief Justice of the time, Ralph de Hengham? On the night of October 16, 1834, the old tower was destroyed by a fire. After that, a new tower was constructed under the direction of Charles Barry, the chief architect of the Palace of Westminster. The tower is built in the Neo-Gothic style and stands 96.3 meters tall.
